Clinical and laboratory aspects of common variable immunodeficiency Anais da ABC (AABC)
Kokron,Cristina M.; Errante,Paolo R.; Barros,Myrthes T.; Baracho,Gisele V.; Camargo,Maristela M.; Kalil,Jorge; Rizzo,Luiz V..
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is an immunological disorder characterized by defective antibody production, recurrent infections, most notably of the respiratory tract, autoimmune phenomena and cancer. Some CVID patients may also present disturbances of the cellular immune response such as a decrease in the number and proportion of different lymphocyte populations, diminished lymphoproliferative response to mitogens and antigens, altered production of cytokines, and deficient expression of cell-surface molecules. Most Brazilian CVID patients included in this study show a decrease in T and B lymphocyte counts in the peripheral blood. Furthermore, their lymphocytes are more susceptible to apoptosis following activation than normal individuals, and...

Contribution Towards the Anatomy of the Esophageal Hiatus and its Relationship with the Presence of Bundles of Collagen Fibers in its Margins International Journal of Morphology
Filho,José Jeová de Oliveira; Filho,Benedito Herani; Reis,Francisco Prado; Feitosa,Vera Lúcia Correa; Aragão,José Aderval.
The aim was to detect the presence of bundles of collagen fibers in the margins of the esophageal hiatus and establish if there is any relationship of these bundles with the anatomy of the hiatus. Ten adult male cadavers, with no gross anatomical alteration caused by trauma, surgery or disease, upon the esophageal hiatus were used in the study. A piece of anatomical structure comprising the diaphragm with the esophageal hiatus and adjacent tissues was removed, dissected and 10% formol embedding. With the aid of a digital caliper, measurements of the perimeter of the esophageal hiatus were done both in the abdominal and thoracic sides. For the structural study each margin was divided in six sections. Staining techniques of Masson and Picrosirius-hematoxilin...

Epidemiological aspects of an infection by Brucella abortus in risk occupational groups in the microregion of Araguaína, Tocantins BJID
Ramos,Taciana Rabelo Ramalho; Pinheiro Junior,José Wilton; Moura Sobrinho,Pedro Alves de; Santana,Vânia Lúcia de Assis; Guerra,Neurisvan Ramos; Melo,Lúcio Esmeraldo Honório de; Mota,Rinaldo Aparecido.
The aim of this paper was to study some epidemiological aspects of the infection by Brucella abortus in risk occupational groups in the microregion of Araguaína, Tocantins. For antibody research, 645 serum samples were analyzed by the complement fixation test (CF). A 4.0% frequency was found (26/645) in patients' serum and among those 4.1% (23/551) were slaughterhouses employees and 8.1% (3/37) rural workers. Of the total positive samples, three (2.0%) were women and 23 (4.7%) men; ten (2.9%) were between the ages of 18 and 30, six (3.4%) between 31 and 40, and nine (8.0%) were above 41 years of age. Risk factors for brucellosis in the study groups were age, background (OR = 2.45; CI 95% = 0.98 to 6.10) and previous work conducted with production animals...

More about human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis in Brazil: serological evidence of nine new cases BJID
Costa,Paulo Sérgio Gonçalves da; Valle,Lena Márcia de Carvalho; Brigatte,Marco Emilio; Greco,Dirceu Bartolomeu.
Human Ehrlichia chaffeensis infections have been reported in North America, Asia and Europe, but only recently have human cases been reported in Brazil. Nine new human cases of E. chaffeensis infection diagnosed on a clinical and serological basis are reported. Serological tests were performed with indoor slides prepared with CDC stock DH-82 cells infected with E. chaffeensis (Arkansas strain). All but two patients were adults. Seven patients were male and two female. The fever duration varied from 4 to 120 days with a median of 6 days. All patients recalled previous tick attack. IgM was detected in four cases. Influenza like syndrome was the most frequent clinical form affecting five patients. Two patients had fever of unknown origin (FUO), one patient...

Olfactory or auditory stimulation and their hedonic valúes differentially modulate visual working memory Biol. Res.
DONOSO,ANA M; FAUNDES,VÍCTOR; FALCON,FELIPE; ESPARZA,PAULINA; MALDONADO,PEDRO E.
Working memory (WM) designates the retention of objects or events in conscious awareness when these are not present in the environment. Many studies have focused on the interference properties of distracter stimuli in working memory, but these studies have mainly examined the influence of the intensity of these stimuli. Little is known about the memory modulation of hedonic content of distracter stimuli as they also may affect WM performance or attentional tasks. In this paper, we have studied the performance of a visual WM task where subjects recollect from five to eight visually presented objects while they are simultaneously exposed to additional - albeit weak- auditory or olfactory distracter stimulus. We found that WM performance decreases as the...

Pharmacology of human experimental anxiety BJMBR
Graeff,F.G.; Parente,A.; Del-Ben,C.M.; Guimarães,F.S..
This review covers the effect of drugs affecting anxiety using four psychological procedures for inducing experimental anxiety applied to healthy volunteers and patients with anxiety disorders. The first is aversive conditioning of the skin conductance responses to tones. The second is simulated public speaking, which consists of speaking in front of a video camera, with anxiety being measured with psychometric scales. The third is the Stroop Color-Word test, in which words naming colors are painted in the same or in a different shade, the incongruence generating a cognitive conflict. The last test is a human version of a thoroughly studied animal model of anxiety, fear-potentiated startle, in which the eye-blink reflex to a loud noise is recorded. The...

Resistance profile to antimicrobials of Salmonella spp. isolated from human infections BABT
Delicato,Elaine Regina; Mikcha,Jane Martha Graton; Fernandes,Sueli Aparecida; Pelayo,Jacinta Sanchez.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the profile of antimicrobial resistance among 21 strains of Salmonella isolated from patients with gastroenteritis symptom. It was observed that S. enteritidis was the serotype prevalent. These strains were sensitive to the majority of the antimicrobials tested, however, high resistance was observed in S. typhimurium and S. enterica subsp. enterica serotype 4,5,12:i:-. Surveillance and an efficient monitoring should be priority for the public health for the containment of antimicrobial resistance in foodborne infections.

Rickettsia felis infection in cat fleas Ctenocephalides felis felis BJM
Horta,Mauricio C.; Scott,Fabio B.; Correia,Thaís R.; Fernandes,Julio I.; Richtzenhain,Leonardo J.; Labruna,Marcelo B..
The present study evaluated the rickettsial infection in a laboratory colony of cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouche) in Brazil. All flea samples (30 eggs, 30 larvae, 30 cocoons, 30 males, and 30 females) tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were shown to contain rickettsial DNA. PCR products, corresponding to the rickettsial gltA, htrA, ompA and ompB gene partial sequences were sequenced and showed to correspond to Rickettsia felis, indicating that the flea colony was 100% infected by R. felis. The immunofluorescence assay (IFA) showed the presence of R. felis-reactive antibodies in blood sera of 7 (87.5%) out of 8 cats that were regularly used to feed the flea colony. From 15 humans that used to work with the flea colony in the laboratory,...
